Original windmills in operation
You will be picked up and within a 35 minute drive from Amsterdam, you will arrive at Zaanse Schans. Arrive at Zaanse Schans and explore the open-air museum. This outdoor museum showcases traditional Dutch windmills, houses, and craft workshops, giving you a glimpse into the country’s history and culture. Visit and tour one or two windmills. Several are open to the public, and you can learn about their functions and even see them in action. Take a leisurely stroll along the canals, admiring the picturesque wooden houses and shops. You can also stop by the cheese and clog shops to taste some local delicacies and purchase souvenirs. If you’re interested in history, make a visit to the Zaans Museum. It provides an in-depth look into the industrial history of the Zaan region and houses various exhibits and artifacts.
Have a traditional Dutch lunch at one of the Zaanse Schans’ charming cafes or restaurants. Try some local specialties like Poffertjes (mini pancakes) or Hollandse Nieuwe (raw herring).
After lunch, consider renting a bicycle or taking a boat tour along the Zaan River to explore the surrounding areas. You can enjoy the beautiful countryside, visit nearby villages, or even go for a bike ride to the nearby Windmill Museum. Alternatively, you can take a short train ride to the nearby city of Zaandam and explore its attractions, such as the Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Zaandam or the Russian Tsar Peter House Museum.
In the late afternoon, head back to Zaanse Schans to catch the sunset. The tranquil setting and the windmills lined along the riverbank make for a picturesque view.
Lastly, head back to Koog-Zaandijk station or directly by care and head back to Amsterdam.
