Nijmegen
After our drive to Nijmegen, we take a leisurely stroll through Nijmegen’s charming historical center. Wander around the Grote Markt, where you’ll find the beautiful St. Steven’s Church and the nearby Valkhof Park. The park is situated on a hill with amazing views of the Waal River. A suggestion is to visit the Valkhof Museum. This museum is located near Valkhof Park and offers a deep dive into Nijmegen’s ancient history. The museum features Roman relics, medieval artifacts, and modern art. It’s an excellent way to learn more about the city’s evolution.
After the museum, head down to the river. There’s a lovely promenade where you can walk along the Waal, enjoying views of the city and the famous Waalbrug (Waal Bridge). You might also spot a few boats or cyclists along the way.
If you’re into nature, visit Sint Annas Hof and Het Rijk van Nijmegen (the surrounding nature reserves). They are great for a peaceful walk or bike ride through lush greenery. Alternatively, you can head to Goffertpark, a larger park near the city’s outskirts.
If you’re up for some more sightseeing, walk across the Waalbrug (Waal Bridge). It offers a stunning view of both the city and the river. It’s an iconic part of the Nijmegen skyline and has a lot of historical significance.
TWhen there is time left, we visit the Honingcomplex. This is a former industrial site that’s been repurposed into a cultural and creative hub. It has several galleries, quirky shops, and even a nice bar or two to grab a drink.
If you still have some energy after dinner, take a relaxed evening stroll along the river again or grab a drink at one of the riverside bars or terraces, like Café Van Buren. It’s a great way to end the day, watching the sun set over the Waal.
